I talk about the recent poll by Ipsos-NPR about education, and the need to have intelligent discussion about race, gender identity, and sexuality in schools.
Hello, hello, hello, John Mason. How is everybody? You see the whole big hoo-ha about um about uh Republican state legislatures and governors terrorizing uh uh school districts and teachers about uh the dangers of the evil thing known as critical race theory and terrorizing uh gay and trans kids and trying to prevent any intelligent discussion about uh race in this country. So they're not quote woke like this a bad thing. And and uh we have hordes of adults, so-called, uh, passing themselves off as parents of school kids, uh terrorizing uh stit county health officials and and uh school boards even threatening violence around these things, particularly around the pandemic. Well there's this new report out of a new uh poll taken under Ipsos and uh and uh and NPR. It go the ideas is that uh that the trends are all positive about uh about improvements. I'm gonna read you from the Ipsos report. More parents indicate their child is ahead where they should be at math and science, reading, writing, social skills, and mental health compared to February 2021. Only half, only about one in ten indicate their child is behind where they should be in these areas. Nearly half, 47% of parents say that the pandemic has not disrupted their child's education. Fear now say that their child dislikes school more than more than before COVID compared to last year. And more parents, 73% indicate their child will benefit from mental health counseling now than in February 2021, 68%. And it goes on to say that uh parents have no trouble discuss in general discussed, have no trouble with uh discussions about race and and uh LGBT issues, but we have such geniuses as uh Ron DeSantis in Florida, terrorizing school kid, kids like the way like the ones he bullied at uh about wearing masks and and uh and uh in Texas threatening uh the parents of kids who go re going with transgender surgery and there's reports that the trans and gay kids are becoming more are likely to commit suicide because they feel scapegoat, they feel hated because of because of the terror they're facing due to their their gender identity questions and their sexuality questions. And all this for what to try to appease a raving lunatic minority in uh that goes on Fox News or One America News or Newsmax to try to appease a one lunatic minority, which unfortunately does certainly vote, and which dominates the Republican Party and the whole apparatus. We have to mobilize against these folks. We have to let them know that we must have intelligent conversations around race, around gender identity, around sexuality, especially kids trying to prepare them for the world. When they get when they graduate from high school. Seems to me that so many parents uh project themselves on their kids. Like, I don't I don't care about gays, I don't want my kid to learn about gays. That's gonna prevent the kid learning about gays or being gay. Or I don't want any talk about race, or I don't want uh my kid hanging around with dark-skinned people. But they're not gonna be in the house forever, are they? They gotta live their own lives too after they graduate. It's like it's all about the parents and their vanity and their their limited work view of the world rather than uh what's good for the kids. I mean, I don't I know there's plenty, plenty, plenty of parents who want what's right for the kids. Want the kids to have a good education, be prepared for the outside world. But so many kids, and Lord knows I had a pair like that, who just uh think the kids gonna be a kid forever, stay in the house forever, just be a projection of themselves. But the kids gotta grow up and deal with the outside world. Bottom line. So we have to uh mobilize ourselves politically, educate ourselves about the issues, and get out and vote. In May of May 17th is going to be the Pennsylvania primary election day, and I again will be running for committee person my ward in Philadelphia. I'm taking part of the system, and I encourage all of you to do to do the same. See, that's what these far-right activists, even downright neo-Nazi activists, are doing. Getting involved in the political system at the most grassroots level, like county row offices or township supervisor or city councils or state legislature. Decision making begins there at the at the most basic level. Our enemies know that, and so must we. So let's not be intimidated by these bullies and thugs. Let's dare to continue to advocate for intelligent discussion about race and deal seriously with the history of this country, the racism in this country. Like currently I'm reading two fine books on the Reconstruction period. Reconstruction, America's Unfinished Revolution by Eric Foner, and Black Reconstruction by the great African American scholar W. E. B. Du Bois. They tell the real story about the Reconstruction period, where black people just out of slavery are struggling to be absorbed into the political and social system of America. And like I said, let's never be intimidated by these bullies and thugs. Let's dare to learn, dare to teach, dare to organize, and dare to vote. Okay, that's my rant for the day.
