I speak about the need to combat climate change, and to urge people to take part in the political process. I also speak of recent legislation in Congress.
Hello, hello, hello, John Mason. How is everybody? Hope you're all well, keeping cool in this heat. Over the weekend, it's going to hit the 100 degree mark. And please don't try to tell me that global warming isn't a thing. Climate change is real. And it is really created by the consuming of fossil fuels. We do have the technology to but to uh to power our ourselves through through electricity. Attain our power through wind and solar and biomass. We can do it. And we have the technology, but but the fossil fuel company, you know, those brilliant in the those brilliant forward-thinking entrepreneurs, they're still addicted to to fossil fuels, like I said. Moving away from wood to coal, then powering, going to oil, then natural gas. Now solar electric. We can do it. But the but the oil industry, the patrol, the fossil fuel industry is too embedded, too much in control of things in Washington. I'm talking to you, Joe Manchin, to uh to be uh be to be moved. All this begging and pleading of members of Congress has gotta stop. We have to demand action now. Now is the time for us uh to hit the streets and hit the ballot box to to demand serious uh environmental environment to deal with the environment to to continue the process, rather creepy and crawly, but to accelerate the process from uh fossil fuels to electric. We have the technology, we just need the political will. And we must impose the political will on our elected members. In fact, why don't we become our elected officials? Why don't we run for office? I mean we who says we can't. I urge everyone for the sake of the uh for the sake of the uh your communities, for the sake of your town cities, for your sake of your nation, seriously consider running for an office. Get involved in the system because the system is involved in you. Political decisions from Washington at the in Congress and the White House and the Supreme Court, all the way down to your township building, they all affect how you uh the quality of your life and what your taxes are spent on. Uh the filtration of your water, the safety of your streets, the pickup of your trash, fire services, you name it. And no more, and none of this rugged individualism crap. We're not our capitalist class are not forward-thinking rebels fighting against governments and unions. They're the owners of the means of production. Yep, I'm gonna use that phrase. Owners of the means of production, they hire workers who who produce things for them with their hands and with their brains for the least amount of money they can squeeze out of them. And those are the people running our our economy. Let's stop mythologizing these people. They don't care about us. So we have to stand up for ourselves. Organize our work sites in the unions. Yes, unions. Organize our communities. And I take this time to commend the organizing work at uh at Starbucks and in Amazon. I will do whatever I can to help that process along. And we have to reorganize our minds. In the words of the psalm by Bob Marley, emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds. We have to, we on the left have to give up this defeat thinking. Be more can do, be more positive. Sure, I mean, these are powerful forces we were up against. Sure they got billions of dollars against us, sure they got politicians in their pocket. Sure they got uh means of diluting people just in the same boat we are that we're we're the enemy. But we can beat them. Time and time again, people have stood up for for their rights. We can be part of that tradition. So so that's what we can we can beat them. And okay, off the soapbox now in advertisements. Hamperific LLC is a lovely little cannabis products store on Snyder Avenue near 15th Street in South Philadelphia. Okay. Always one piece of good news out of Washington. The Respect for Marriage Act has passed in the House with even some Republicans supporting it. The Respect for Marriage Act codifies same-sex marriage at the federal level. It also protects interracial marriage. And this comes after Roe vs. Roe vs. Wade. The that was the decision that the Supreme Court put down in 1973, which said that states had no right to prohibit women from having abortions. And after the recent Supreme Court ruling voiding Roe v. Wade, it was obvious after Justice Clarence Thomas, Justice in the loosest sense of the word, opened his big mouth and said that other decisions from the court were going to be reconsidered, such as the ones legalizing gay marriage, same-sex marriage, the ones legalizing same-sex sex, and the ones legalizing interracial marriage. So let's let's remember that. And there's also a bill working its way in the house that will finally decriminalize the use of cannabis products. Way long overdue. Scientifically, cannabis is not in the same category as cocaine or heroin, methamphenes. Not the same. It was a way to target minorities. And it was a it was obvious in the in the diary confession by John Ehrlichman, who was an aide to Richard Nixon, outright admitting that Nixon's war on drugs was a war on minorities and anti-war activists. We have to rethink this war on drugs thing. I mean, apparently the drugs are winning. Over fifty fifty years. Over fifty years we've had this war on drugs, and the drugs still keep coming in. So it's not let's just say it's not working. We had to eventually withdraw from the war in Vietnam because it wasn't working, and we had to withdraw from Afghanistan because that wasn't working. So let's withdraw finally from the war on drugs. Treating it like a mental health problem as opposed to being a law enforcement problem. We can do it. Okay? Okay, that's it. And now I'm closing out. Oh, one more thing. My video blog series, the Mason Moment, is on a bit of a hyena hiatus. I'm try I'm experimenting with new uh uh video produ editing platforms. So I'm don't worry, it'll come back. Okay. You'll be well. Thanks. Have a good weekend, and keep cool.
